about:
dear birthday is a handmade clothing, accessories, etc
project by valerie soles. valerie received her bfa in
photography, but has found that more than adjusting
exposures and mixing chemicals, she really enjoys putting
things together. making clothes has always been one of
her favorite methods of construction and she is excited
by the opportunity to put together the products of her
experiments in pattern-making and cloth with her
favored method of presentation, photography.

dear birthday is the product of valerie's pet interests,
particularly fairy tales, folk dress, and nature (especially
things beachy and sea-bound), to name a few.

dear birthday believes that social and ecological
awareness and responsibility should not be merely a
trend, but an imperative. we are continually searching for
new and better ways to reduce our own impact on the
planet and its inhabitants while creating sweatshop-free
garments you can feel proud to wear. we hope to
introduce our own line of organic cotton textiles through
valerian, a collaboration with ian whitmore in our fall of
2008 line.

valerie currently lives in brooklyn with her boyfriend, the
aforementioned painter
ian whitmore and her dog, the
panter geoffrey underfoot.
